Sheffield and the
surrounding region

Our extraordinary city

Sheffield is a major student city with a strong sense of community. It’s vibrant, diverse and surrounded by some of the most breathtaking countryside in the UK. We’re not surprised that so many of our students move here and fall in love with Sheffield. They discover a a forward-thinking city that’s safe, affordable and easy to explore.
Our extraordinary city is the perfect setting for groundbreaking collaborations. Although it’s world-famous for precision engineering, creative and digital industries account for almost two fifths of the region’s jobs.

Healthcare

Healthcare technology is another growth sector. Sheffield Teaching Hospitals is the UK’s largest NHS foundation trust. Our close links with the city make innovation and progression possible.

Green city

Sheffield has been called the UK’s greenest city; there are 50 public parks and 170 woodlands within the city boundary. As England’s fourth-largest city, it has the wealth of facilities you’d expect to find in a major city, yet more than a third of Sheffield lies inside the Peak District National Park.
Sheffield is geographically diverse, nestled in a natural amphitheatre created by seven hills, and fed by five rivers. This diversity has given rise to an exceptional range of activities available, from climbing, mountain biking, road cycling, running, walking – we’ve got some of the best in the world.

Relocation support

The University of Sheffield recognises the importance of supporting its new staff by making the move to take up a position at the University as straightforward as possible. As well as our generous relocation packages to assist with removal costs and practicalities, we recognise that changing work location is both a practical matter and also a major life change, often affecting partners and families too.

The University has therefore developed provision to offer relocation guidance and support on an individual and personalised basis for those relocating to take up a permanent appointment at the University at a professorial and professorial equivalent level.

For eligible staff, this can include help with finding a suitable place to live, advice about transport, schools, health and other care services, and career support for partners who may also need to seek work in the region.

Our professional relocation support provider (Relocate2Sheffield) can advise you from the moment you are offered a position at the University, and work with you in preparation for your move.

They will tailor their support to meet your own personal needs, questions and priorities so that your move to Sheffield will be as smooth as possible.

We recognise that amongst the many issues you will be considering in relation to your move, relocating your partner’s career may be an important factor.

Whilst we cannot guarantee to find them a position, we can arrange bespoke career support through our partners who have contacts with local organisations, businesses and employment agencies, and also offer guidance on CV-writing, interview skills and career advice.

The service will be tailored to your needs and delivered directly to you and your family, arranged and fully paid for by the University. Note: the value of this service is reported for tax purposes as a benefit in kind.
Support is subject to the policy in the university’s ‘Guidance on reimbursement of costs of relocation’, and bespoke support will be discussed at the appropriate point in the recruitment process.
